How well do you know your neighbor, or how about the waitress or owner at your favorite restaurant? Do you even know all of your colleagues or about their personal lives? How often do we push aside these people that we see most days but don’t consider our friends? Is it because we’re just so busy, or because we don’t really care?
Whatever the reason is, start taking an extra 5 minutes a day to say a simple “hi and how are you” to your acquaintances.
Why, you ask?
Well, first off, maybe your relationship can become something more meaningful. Perhaps you two have more in common than you realize and you might really enjoy spending time together. One day, you both might consider yourselves as close as family, or maybe you might become family!
Another reason is to make better connections for possible opportunities or significant moments in the future. This could mean that one of you introduce the other to a job which saves your unemployment or one of you is there for the other to take to the hospital in case of an emergency or to turn off your hair straightener if you leave it on in your apartment! One of you might just be there for the other, saying something positive and kind on a day that is one of those ‘blue days’. Or possibly, that owner of your favorite Indian restaurant introduces his daughter to your son which sparks fireworks at first site. YOU NEVER KNOW. For this reason, be kind to everyone you meet and make an attempt to allow your acquaintance relationship to grow into something more meaningful. You never know how close you two will become, or when and where you’ll need that someone to help you out, or vice versa.
Who in your life is your acquaintance? How could you attempt to make your relationship stronger? What do you think the benefit of getting closer to that specific person would be?
